2020 Grammy Awards

On January 26, hundreds of talented artists received an award at the 2020 Grammy’s. One singer/songwriter, Billie Eilish, became the first artist to earn best new artist, record of the year, song of the year, and album of the year awards all in one year since 1981. She is also the youngest person to win album of the year. In fact, one of her hit songs, “Bad Guy,” rose 80 percent streams the day after her performance. At the Grammy’s, Eilish wanted to give a special shout out to her fans because she said they don’t get enough recognition at the Grammy’s, “They are the only reason any of us are here at all. So thank you to the fans.” Her brother, Finneas, helps Eilish write her albums. Eilish calls him her partner in making music (1).

Many fans were surprised when Tyler, the Creator won Best Rap Album award. Up against Meek Mill and 21 Savage, he won his very first Grammy award. Next to his mother, he thanked his family, fans, and and managers. (2) Another artist, Demi Lavato, had the entire audience standing as she sang her new single “Anyone,” which she recorded four days before her near-fatal overdose in 2018.

Sophmore Eva Parker didn’t watch the Grammy’s live, but she did watch a few highlights of the performances and awards. “My favorite part about the Grammy’s were the performances because I like everyone’s different style of music.” Parker said.  Most students just watched the Grammy’s for the performances because they like to watch their favorite artists perform.

Many artists who preformed at the Grammy’s, such as Lizzo, gave a shout out to Kobe Bryant, who passed earlier that day. In 2018, Bryant won an award for his short film, Dear Basketball, at the Grammy’s. Alicia Keys, the host of this year’s Grammy’s, made sure to keep it respectful while still having fun.

The 2020 Grammy’s was full of new singers and many awards and performances. With Lil Nas X introducing himself with his hit song, Old town Road, Billie Eilish winning record-breaking awards, and Demi Lavato’s comeback from laying low the past year after her overdose, the 2020 Grammy Awards takes everyone into this year with many opportunities for new artists to top the charts and compete with other singers.
