Tuesday, June 12th, two days before the last day of school and three days before graduation is the date of the Virginia primary for the midterm election in November.

For many high school students, the June 12th primary is the first election they can participate in.

According to Fair Vote, an organization advocating for voting reformation, Virginia is one of 21 states that allows for 17 year olds to vote in a primary if they will be 18 by the November elections. Following this rule, most current seniors and some current juniors will be able to vote on June 12th.

To be eligible to vote on June 12th, prospective voters must be registered by Monday, May 21st.

Senator Tim Kaine and Scott Taylor, representative for District 2, are both up for reelection in the November midterm. District 2 is the House of Representatives district that covers all of York County. It also extends to cover Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore.

According to the Virginia Department of Elections, Kaine is not being contested by a fellow democrat in the primary. However, there are three people running to be the Republican nominee for the Senate seat: Corey A. Stewart, Nick J. Freitas, and E. W. Jackson.

Meanwhile, Mary K. Jones is contesting Taylor  in the primary. There are also two democrats running for the nomination: Elaine G. Luria and Karen Powers Mallard.

While it is leaning slightly Republican currently, according to the Cook Political Report, Taylor’s seat is a vulnerable House of Representatives seat in the midterm election.

The vulnerability of Republican-held seats in Congress could result in a flip in the party control of one or both of the houses of Congress.

A flip in either of the houses would result in an increased difficulty for Trump to successfully get Congress to pass legislation he favors.
