With a record of 4-1-3 the Grafton Clippers girls Varsity Soccer team has been on the up and up this season. Ranked #11 out of the 757’s top 15+ rankings the team has been progressing steadily. It is evident that the team has really grown and developed into a tight, close knit group in just a few weeks, this aspect helps attributes to the unity and strength this team has.

Coach Galen Smalls, otherwise known as Gator by the team, continuously states that “this team has a lot of potential.” Over the course of being the girls varsity coach for the past 3 years Gator has been able to witness this team evolve into the best it has been yet. On Wednesday April 19th the team tied 0-0 against our greatest rivals, Tabb high school, in a high intensity overtime game, which hasn’t been done in over 5 years.

When asked about the overall strengths of the team, Coach Gator doesn’t hesitate to say that it’s, “[the team’s] ability to learn from one another, whether it’s young teaching old or vice versa.” With the team being made up primarily upon underclassmen it is great seeing the different dynamics that have formed amongst the team; the upperclassmen have learned a lot from the younger players. The team has created a judgment free atmosphere in which it is okay and even encouraged to make mistakes, as it only helps the team grow and get better. Gator also stated that another strength of the team was, “their work ethic and ability to balance fun and coachable moments.”

Captain Julia Larsen has stated that her two years of experience in a leadership position on the team has been a “huge learning curve.” This has taught her the importance and necessity of a strong leader on a team. It is her goal this season to create a “much more bonded team that will want to work for each other.” This has been true throughout the season, this aspiration has been a success.

The strides this team has made so far this year is extremely promising, especially for the remaining games and upcoming postseason. The Grafton girls have proven themselves and they are destined for greatness. Go Clippers!
